Career option for Control Engineers

A control engineer is responsible for designing, developing, installing, managing and/or maintaining equipment which is used to monitor and control engineering systems, machinery and processes.

Control engineers make sure that these systems and processes operate effectively, efficiently and safely.

They work for the companies who manufacture and supply the equipment or for the companies who use it, such as nuclear and renewable energy companies and environmental agencies.

Control engineers need a thorough understanding of the operational processes of an organisation. They have a multidisciplinary role, working closely with colleagues across a number of functions, including operations, purchasing and design.

The field of automation involves the creation and application of technology to monitor or control the production and delivery of products and services by the International Society of Automation and the Automation Federation. Automation engineers design, program, simulate and test automated machinery and processes in order to complete exact tasks.

They typically are employed in industries such as car manufacturing or food processing plants, where robots or machines are used to perform specific functions. Automation engineers are responsible for design specifications and other detailed documentation of their creations.
